Are You Showing Up When Someone Asks ChatGPT for a Plumber?
· AI Search · 4 min read
It’s 9 PM, and a homeowner’s water heater is leaking into the basement. She doesn’t scroll through ten blue links. She opens ChatGPT or taps Google’s AI Mode and types, “Who’s a good emergency plumber near me?” A short list of names comes back, and she calls the first one that sounds right.
If your business isn’t on that list, you didn’t slip a few spots in the rankings. You never entered the conversation. That’s the idea behind AI visibility, and for local service businesses it’s quickly becoming as important as a first-page Google ranking.
How AI decides who to recommend
Traditional search ranks pages. AI search builds an answer, and it builds that answer from sources it already trusts: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, the directories that list you, and your website. If those sources are thin, inconsistent, or missing, the AI has nothing to work with and moves on to a competitor who gave it more.
The tools don’t all lean on the same sources, either. A BrightLocal study published in August 2026 analyzed nearly 2 million AI citations across 1,355 business locations. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode leaned heavily on Google Business Profile. ChatGPT leaned on Yelp, which showed up in about 80% of its local answers. Same question, different sources, different shortlists.
What AI actually reads
Four places do most of the work. You control all of them, and none of them require a new website.
| Source | What AI gets from it | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Your name, address, phone, hours, services, and category | Fill in every field. Add services, photos, and posts. Keep hours current. |
| Reviews | What customers say you do well, in their words | Ask for them after every job. Reply to all of them. |
| Directories (Yelp, Facebook, BBB, Angi, industry sites) | A second and third confirmation that you exist and where | Claim each listing. Make the name, address, and phone match everywhere. |
| Your website | The detail the listings can’t hold | Give each service and each city its own page, in plain language. |
That last row matters more than it looks. In the BrightLocal data, around 93% of the domains AI cited were individual business websites, so a site that clearly answers “what do you fix, and where?” gives the AI something specific to quote.
Plumbers get 54% of AI citations from Google Business Profile. Yelp is a clear second almost everywhere, coming in at close to 14% for plumbers. It’s worthwhile to claim your Yelp profile, but your GBP is the first thing to get right. Lawyers are the one industry where a specialty directory shows up: Justia picks up 3.2% of citations.
The five-minute check
You can see where you stand right now, for free.
- Open ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode in a private browser window, so past searches don’t skew the answer.
- Ask the questions a customer would: “best plumber in [your city]” and “emergency plumber near me”
- Write down every business named, and whether yours is one of them.
- Ask a follow-up question: “What do customers say about [your business]?” Check the hours, services, and service area it gives. Wrong details usually trace back to a listing you haven’t updated.
- Repeat from a few spots in your service area. AI answers shift with location, which is why BrightLocal ran every prompt from nine different points around each business.
What to fix first
Start with your Google Business Profile. It’s the most-cited source in every industry in the data, and Google’s AI tools lean on it harder than any other. Fill in every field, add each service you offer, and keep hours and service areas current.
Next, claim your Yelp listing even if you don’t care about Yelp. ChatGPT cites it more than any other source, so an empty or outdated page there can cost you in one of the places homeowners are asking.
Then make your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere you’re listed, and ask for a review after every job. Reviews are slow to build, which is exactly why starting now matters.
Last, give your website a page for each service and each city you cover. It’s the slowest fix, but it’s where AI finds the specifics.
One caution: AI answers change by prompt, by platform, and by location. A single screenshot proves very little, so check on a schedule and watch the trend.
Find out where you stand
The homeowner with the leaking water heater will pick from whatever the AI shows her. The businesses that get named aren’t luckier. They’ve given the AI more accurate, more consistent information to work with.
